Lancaster student Covid-19 cases drop, but death rate continues to rise across Morecambe Bay hospitals

At one point earlier this month, around 1,000 students were self-isolating after more than 100 cases of coronavirus were confirmed on the Bailrigg campus in a week.

Between October 6 and 12, 120 students living on campus and 56 living off campus tested positive, along with two staff members.

The following week, between October 13 and 19, another 103 students living on campus and 63 living off campus tested positive for Covid-19, along with eight members of staff.

But between October 20 and 26, 19 students living on campus and 21 living off campus, along with four staff members, tested positive.

As of Wednesday October 28, Lancaster as a whole had a recorded 2,899 positive cases (up from 2,845).

And the number of people who have died after testing positive for coronavirus continues to rise in Morecambe Bay hospitals, with a further two recorded on Wednesday and one on Tuesday.

The figures released by NHS England mean there have now been 11 deaths recorded in the last week.

This brings the total of deaths after testing positive for coronavirus within the last 28 days at hospitals run by University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Trust to 212, with the numbers roughly split between the Royal Lancaster Infirmary and Furness General Hospital in Barrow.

More than 400 people have been discharged from UHMBT after making a recovery.
