The Home Office formally notified Mr Morris of their decision in writing, saying they were now terminating their contract with the Strathmore Hotel as asylum accommodation, and it will cease being used by the end of January 2024, reflecting the contractual notice period the Home Office have on the property.

Asylum seekers who are currently housed there will be notified a minimum of five days in advance before they are moved to another part of the asylum estate.

Mr Morris said: "I have been working with the Home Office since January to cease the use of the Strathmore Hotel in Morecambe as temporary accommodation for asylum seekers.

“Our community is a welcoming and inclusive one but the facility that has been operating at the Strathmore has caused pressure on our local services and has caused a great deal of concern for residents living in the vicinity.

Hotels are not appropriate places to house asylum seekers and I welcome the Home Office’s decision to terminate their contract with the Strathmore Hotel with the contract ending at the end of January.

“I know local residents in Bare will be extremely pleased by this announcement.”
