Standing by the prime Minister on Euro vote

The other Monday the Prime Minister made a statement in the House of Commons to announce the end of the EU negotiations and the date for the EU Referendum as Thursday June 23.

There has been much made in the national press about how each Member of Parliament is going to vote which has led to some confusion regarding who can vote in the referendum.

A vote of a Member of Parliament in the referendum holds no more weight than any other member of the public who all have a vote. For this reason I believe very strongly that people should be left to make their own mind up on this very important vote.

I have put a full statement on my website sharing my views on this issue for those who would like more information on my thoughts but I will not be joining any of the campaigns to stay in or out nor will I be commenting any further on the vote.

I made the decision on how I will vote following the Prime Ministers statement in the chamber and said: “There is nobody in this House more Eurosceptic than myself, but I am standing at the side of the Prime Minister on this one, because the Prime Minister has always stood by me and my people in Morecambe.

“In my constituency, we have the port of Heysham, through which 10 per cent of our GDP passes, most of it from Northern Ireland.

“We also have two EDF nuclear power stations, which are sponsored by the French Government.

“I do not want jobs to be lost in my constituency, especially as its unemployment rate is the lowest it has been for generations.”

I have met with Network Rail in Parliament so they could brief me on the works in Bolton-le-Sands on the mainline to remove vegetation to prevent lines becoming blocked in bad weather.

This work will be undertaken in March and April 2016 and will help our railway locally to be more safe and reliable.
