Security for working people at heart of Queen's Speech
The Queen recently attended the House of Lords to officially open the new session of Parliament for the coming year.
The Queen announced the Government’s plans for the coming year and the themes at the centre were to strengthen the economy, deliver security for working people, increase life chances for the most disadvantaged and strengthen our national security.
The speech delivers security for working people which is a vital next step in our long-term economic plan. Whether it is continuing to bring the public finances under control so Britain lives within its means; delivering the infrastructure British business needs to carry on creating jobs; making our country a world leader in the digital economy; spreading prosperity across the Northern Powerhouse; or supporting aspiration by promoting home ownership, this is a Queen’s Speech that delivers on the Government’s promise of providing security at every stage of people’s lives.
At the heart of this Queen’s speech are bold reforms that tackle some of the deepest social problems in our country and remove all barriers to opportunity. Giving children in care the best possible start in life, reforming our prisons; transforming the education system and helping people save.
The first duty of Government is to keep our country safe. So this is a Queen’s speech that invests in Britain’s armed forces, secures the long-term future of our nuclear deterrent and gives our security and intelligence agencies the powers they need to keep safe.
Keep reading these columns over the next few months as I will be shining a spotlight on each proposed bill and explaining what it will mean for us in Morecambe and Lunesdale.
I was invited by RBS/Natwest to host a lunch meeting at the Morecambe Hotel with local businesses. It was a great forum to discuss the future for the local area and hear their exciting plans for the future.
