How Universal Credit is working in Morecambe

The other Monday, I was pleased to welcome a group from Carnforth North Road Primary School to the Houses of Parliament.

They were one of the first school groups from the constituency to visit the new education centre built next to Parliament.

The group had a tour of the estate and then went back to the education centre for a workshop and question-and-answer session with myself. I am always pleased to see school groups and am always impressed with their questions and how engaged they are with the role of a Member of Parliament.

The other Friday I met United Utilities area stakeholder manager Stephen Wong who updated me on the latest projects and works the company are carrying out in the area.

The main project being near Midland Terrace, Carnforth, which is the most recent project in works to improve bathing water quality across the Bay.

The works will be installing a new underground storm tank to keep storm water and treat it instead of it all being flushed out into the River Keer. Work on this project is due to start soon, and I am aware United Utilities has carried out consultation with residents throughout the planning period.

If you still have concerns, please let me know and I will ask one of the United Utilities team to get in touch with you.

I also met John Lowe, who manages Morecambe JobCentre, as part of our regular meetings. I met John to discuss the implementation of Universal Credit and how this is working in Morecambe.

It is always interesting to hear from John and his team how Government policy is being enacted in practice and how unemployment figures are reflected in the area.

I am pleased Universal Credit is having a positive impact on people in part-time work moving into full time work.
