Young golfers are doing their clubs proud

The other weekend was the annual ‘Blenkinsop Token’ competition, a triangular event between Heysham, Morecambe and Lancaster Golf Clubs, where teams of seven of the best junior golfers from each club compete for the ‘Token’.

This year the competition was held at Morecambe Golf Club and I was invited along in my role as Heysham Captain. It was a great day and there was some absolutely stunning golf played by the teams (whose ages, by the way, ranged from 11 to 17). The player of the day must go to John Wilding, who went round the course in just two over par, and I’m pleased to say John is a Heysham player.

As I walked around the course watching the matches, it struck me that the players, although fiercely competitive, were also very supportive of their opponents and there were regular bursts of applause and complements on good shots played. It was a closely-fought competition and, I’m pleased to say, Heysham eventually triumphed, winning the ‘Token’ for the third consecutive time.

This was thanks, in no small amount, to the Junior Captain Matthew Bargh, who also made excellent speeches straight after the match and then again, when receiving the ‘Token’ at the presentation dinner.

I think golf is an excellent sport for youngsters to take up because they learn, not only how to play and the rules of golf, but they also learn the etiquette of the game and this, I believe, influences how they conduct themselves in life.

It was a pleasure to watch the team members at the presentation dinner, all suited and booted, and I’m sure all the officials present were rightfully proud of their junior members. I know the Heysham Professional, Ryan Done, was an especially proud man as not only had he coached every member of the Heysham team since they could first hold a club, but also three of the team were his sons who, surprisingly enough, are exceptionally gifted golfers.

Luckily for them though, they got their mother’s looks! Momma Done, Linda, was there to support her men and then to do a check they were all dressed properly before going into the dinner. I think they all passed muster with the exception of Ryan; I’m sure I saw Linda telling him off for getting his shoes mucky.

The re-opening of the Morecambe Hotel has been much anticipated and Carla and I went to the official ribbon cutting ceremony. We had looked round only a couple of weeks ago, but now all the finishing touches have been made, the result is truly fabulous.

My writing cannot possibly do justice to the decor, the food or staff so all I will say is you must try it for yourself and, believe me, whatever your expectations, you will not be disappointed.
