Persistence beats resistance on the road to success

Phew. My last column nearly came unravelled as the All Blacks just about beat the Springboks over the weekend to progress to the final against Australia.

As we discussed, teamwork definitely got them over the line. For those who have been watching their final opponents, the Wallabies, they have one stand-out quality. The subject of this week’s column. Persistence.

They persistently believe they are better than their opposition, regardless of where or who they are playing. In order to hit your targets just like they have, you need a positive mindset. Creating habits takes time. You need to persist. They can take up to three to four weeks to become second nature. Yet most people don’t give them the time to become second nature. Resistance often beats persistence. You need to create the mindset and learn to deal with small failures, and lose the ever-present ‘I’ll start next week’ mentality.

Changing things means coming out of your comfort zone, just as working hard to get results in the gym does. If you’re not feeling slightly uncomfortable with changes, you’re not trying hard enough.

Breaking down your goals into small and attainable chunks means you are not increasing the commitment to something you are unable to achieve. When you hit your small targets, you are showing yourself you are capable of persistence and achieving your long-term ‘vision’, no matter how hard it seems, or how long it takes.

If you find you are not attaining the goals you have set yourself, don’t give up in the first instance. Re-assess them, and work back. Don’t skip them, as they will start to snowball, and will soon become unattainable. It’s at this point that you once again throw in the towel on another goal.

Remember consistency and your persistence means you stand a far better chance of really achieving the target you have set for yourself.

Consistency is king. If you are to unlock whatever it is you set out to do, you need to think of this.

Successful people are persistent. They weren’t born like that. They worked for it. They came out of a comfort zone, got comfortable with being uncomfortable, and achieved their goals.

Persistence beats resistance.
