Other parents are going through similar situations

Well, the snow has now melted and our weekend of sledging was soon forgotten. The boys loved it. For Tom it was a complete sensory experience. He rolled in it, made snow angels and enjoyed riding down the slope on his sledge.

That was until it got too cold for him and he had to come indoors. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted. I was just glad the snow went silently away, with no lingering ice. So once again we find ourselves in another week.

As it is still the beginning of the year, I often find myself thinking back to previous years, and this is usually aided by Facebook reminding me of my past posts, usually concerning the boys. One particular post was a link to a blog I posted a few years back, when Tom was fairly new to Hillside.

My post descried how difficult the morning was, and that Tom was very unhappy about going to school. It ended with me stating I felt like the worst mum in the world. This got me thinking. There will be other parents out there going through similar situations right now. Looking back now though, it feels like I am reading about a completely different person.

That was then and this is now and so much progress has been made. That is why I wanted to share with you the fact things change, that progress can be made.

I never in one million years thought Tom would be going happily to school and without the need for him to wear his monster dressing gown (I must admit I do miss him wearing it) but he now quietly gets ready for school with my assistance. We have a routine we stick to each morning and he is happy with that.

Therefore if you are going through similar circumstances at the moment, with your child having difficulties in getting ready for school in the morning because of anxiety, then please know you are not alone and other parents will be going through similar situations.

Please do find support through the local National Autistic Society branch or via North Lancashire Directions Parent Carer Group, both of which can be found via Facebook. Sometimes it is good to talk to those who understand. That is what I did and it helped me.
