Investing in music for our young people

As vice chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Music group I welcome the £318,827 investment by the Arts Council into the facilities being provided at More music in Morecambe.

More Music is a fantastic facility for young people wanting to get into the music industry or just to have fun with music and it is great to see the Arts Council has recognised this and pledged such a huge amount of funding.

The Arts Council will also be investing £1.6m in music education programmes across Lancashire through the Music Education Hub, which I know More Music is also a part of. When I last visited Sandylands Primary School Frenchie from More Music was helping the children to write a song, and I think that work is vital to promote confidence and creativity.

I was also pleased to be informed that Northgate FC has been awarded £4,500 from the Football Foundation under their Grow the game scheme, which promotes sport to people who would not normally be able to access it.

In Parliament, the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government announced a new tranche of Enterprise Zones which are now open for applications.

Although the application has to be made by Enterprise Partnerships and cannot be directly made by Members of Parliament I think White Lund would be the obvious choice.

As the link road is nearing completion the amount of business being conducted in the White Lund area will vastly increase.

I think an enterprise zone for White Lund would be a good opportunity for the Enterprise partnership to engage with a major project outside of Preston and become truly Lancashire wide.

I was pleased to see that unemployment is continuing to fall by year-on-year and month-on-month.

This drop is down to the hard work and dedication of the staff in Morecambe Job Centre and I would like to thank all of them for the work they have done.
