Fracking vote was major victory for people and plant

Don’t underestimate this is an amazing victory for the people of Lancashire, people in Britain and worldwide – for people and for planet.

A huge congratulations to Frack Free Lancashire, none of this would be possible without their relentless energy and spirit that has inspired so many. Thanks to every person who took part supporting the actions, particularly the 1,000 plus who co-signed my letter of objection. It’s been a stunning campaign and one I’ve been proud to be part of.

We have to keep up the pressure, I am demanding the government respects the council’s decision. At Prime Minister’s Questions I called on David Cameron to stand by his commitment to localism, and respect the decision made by our local councillors.

I am deeply concerned by reports the Government is planning on cutting tax credit. In Lancaster and Fleetwood, there are 8,900 children in families who receive tax credit. Cuts will hit working families on the lowest incomes hardest, potentially meaning more children will fall below the poverty line. Reducing child poverty must remain a key priority. I’ve supported the motion in parliament calling for a re-think on tax credits.

Here in Lancaster I was delighted to be able to accept an invitation to meet Year 9 pupils at Ripley St Thomas School, their Q&A session in assembly was good fun for me – and I hope everyone else enjoyed it, too.

I’m really happy to visit local schools and meet pupils of all ages, please don’t hesitate to invite me along.

As well as meeting with local schools, I enjoy meeting with all local groups, including the local Equity group. We talked about our shared concerns around cuts to the Arts Council, BBC and moves to sideline the arts in education. Locally, we agreed supporting venues like The Dukes through what will be a difficult few years will be a priority.
