Campus in the City Column: celebrating 58 years of marriage

Aside from the hailstones we have seen hammering on the roof of St Nics in the past few days, we have noticed a lot of our events are dealing with different aspects of history and health.

In spite of the weather, we held a fantastic event celebrating Morecambe’s heritage with the Lancaster University UK Student Recruitment and Outreach Office on Friday. We showed off a model Morecambe created by local children and handed out sticks of rock to those of you who could identify some of the town’s most iconic buildings.

We were also joined by Dr Amanda Pullan, from the University’s ‘Edwardian Postcards’ project, who gave us the chance to find out more about the holidaymakers of the past, and use their messages as inspiration for the postcards we made to send to friends and family.

But the highlight of that day was meeting a couple whose own history is tied up very closely with Morecambe’s. Mr and Mrs Titterington (pictured) stopped by and told us the story of how they met on the pier 58 years ago.

Health-wise, we will be hosting events looking at the beginning and end of our lives and about staying well in between.

Babylab will be with us on today and tomorrow (May 5-6). The team will be on hand to take parents and their children through a variety of games and short experiments to show how babies and toddlers learn about the world around them through play and exploration.

We will be looking at planning ahead, bucket lists, why talking things through is important and hosting a ‘Dead Good Read’ book club, all on Tuesday May 10.
