Italy is more accessible than ever

Sometimes you need to travel for a few hours to find this - and I don’t mean Lancaster to Morecambe in a traffic jam!

So, the question is where? Last year, hubby and I set off all Verona bound and were almost beside ourselves that we did not have the multiple flight experience involved in getting to southern Italy.

Of course, if you live in London, then you are relatively lucky and can get some direct flights down there. In the past, I would usually take a long train journey to Gatwick or the like before flying to Bari or Rome.

Nowadays, it’s sometimes just as cheap or cheaper to fly from Manchester to a London airport. That’s your flight numero uno. It takes barely enough time to gulp a coffee and is so much quicker. Anyway I digress.

The main point is your mode of travel should be given some thought in advance. You could also perhaps fly to one of the northern Italy’s airports such as Milan, and then train to your destination. Entirely up to you.

Having been through many of these travel experiences myself one direct flight is a gift. And, if you want to wing your holiday, as far as Italy goes, you can’t go far wrong if you choose either Verona, Pisa or Milan as your destination because from here, it will be easy for you to reach some desirable locations. For example, Milan is near Lake Como, Pisa is in beautiful Tuscany and Verona has Lake Garda just up the road.

All of these flights are quite short too - two and a half hours maximum - which for nervous fliers helps: Think up (yuk), a quick coffee and sweet or salty nibble, then down (yuk) to bliss.

We particularly liked our Verona flying experience as quick but also just ten minutes from the airport into the countryside, to the divine Hotel Elefante. Also, a Pisa flight took me to Siena, Florenca and Viareggio with ease.

Let's face it, you do not want to spend a chunk of your precious holiday in airports and you will probably have noticed how sometimes the cheapest flights to southern Italy require two days of flying. Absurd when you think it's not that far. However, it is your choice!
