No evidence Morecambe MP broke election laws

David Morris was one of 24 Conservative MPs named in a national newspaper probe into money spent on a campaign Battle Bus during the 2015 election.

The Daily Mirror said Mr Morris and others could have broken election laws by not declaring accommodation costs for activists as part of his local campaign budget.

Mr Morris said the claim was made correctly by Conservative Campaign Headquarters and denied any wrongdoing.

A Lancashire Police spokesperson said: “At the moment there is insufficient information available to indicate an offence may have taken place. Lancashire Constabulary will continue to liaise closely with the Electoral Commission and the NPCC lead and should further information be made available we will reconsider our position.”

On May 12, the Conservative Party produced documents about its spending during the general election after the Electoral Commission took court action.

The watchdog applied to the High Court to force the party to disclose documents. Ten police forces are probing the allegations that Conservative MPs failed to fully declare campaign spending.
