LABOUR’S Beryl Spelling has been elected to represent Westgate Ward on Morecambe Town Council.

She won 191 votes against candidates Terence Ingle, of Morecambe Bay Independents who got 153 votes and Ian Clift, for Liberal Democrats, who got 106 votes.

Morecambe Town Council said the turnout for the by-election was low at 10.99%.

The by-election was held due to a vacant seat left by former leader Roger Plumb, who resigned for personal reasons at the end of September.

Beryl Spelling said: “I got 80% of the ballot box vote, although it was an extremely low turnout.

“I was very pleased. I can understand why they called an election, but it was just the timing.

“I look forward to 2012 and meetings of Morecambe Town Council.”
