Bare councillor June Ashworth will be the next Mayor of the city of Lancaster.

Councillors selected her Mayor-elect at Wednesday’s full council meeting (December 12) and she will take over from the present Mayor, Coun Sheila Denwood, in May.

Coun Ashworth was proposed by her Morecambe Bay Independent colleague Coun Shirley Burns, who said she was dedicated to the area and would be an excellent first citizen.

Coun Ron Sands, seconding, said Coun Ashworth had given exemplary service to her ward and had played an important role in tourism, especially events support.

The Mayor-elect thanked councillors for the honour and looked forward to representing the district.
