A NEW church for Morecambe meets for the first time on September 11.

The first day of Church by the Bay at the Galloway’s Centre, Morecambe, starts with tea and coffee at 10am, and then a meeting at 10.30am.

People can join in as much as they like, or just sit and listen.

Afterwards there’s more refreshments including doughnuts, and a chance to get to know people and to ask any questions.

The church is especially keen to welcome families, and has lots of fun children’s activities.

Church by the Bay are a group of Christians who all live on the Morecambe side of the river. They were originally part of Moorlands Church in Lancaster, but said it was a logical step to say a sad farewell to Lancaster friends and start meeting in Morecambe.

The congregation are a mix of people from all different sorts of backgrounds including older couples, young families, single people and young people. Ages range from zero to 78. Pastor Gerry Straker, his wife Catherine, and their young family have lived in the West End of Morecambe for three years.

He used to work for Moorlands Church in Lancaster, but says he is very happy to now be working in his town.

He said: “We love Morecambe, and we love helping people meet the real Jesus Christ, so it is brilliant to be able to start a new church here.

“We think Jesus Christ has a lot to offer people: significance, security, forgiveness, eternal life and being part of a new family.

“There’s lots of confusion about Jesus and the Christian message, so it will be great to open up the Bible and help Morecambe people meet the real Jesus.”
