New cycle route around the Bay

The Bay Cycle Way started at 9.45am this morning at Sandy Gap on Walney Island.

It finishes on 15 September at Glasson Dock.

Around 28 people have registered to test out the proposed new route, developed by charity Sustrans and Morecambe Bay Partnership,

The route will lead visitors through tourist attractions such as Conishead Priory, Morecambe’s The Midland hotel and the RSPB’s wildlife haven at Leighton Moss.

Sustrans Area Manager Nikki Wingfield said: “The spirit of the ride is very much about enjoying the scenery and the sites slowly rather than clocking up the miles, although sport cyclists are also very welcome too.”

The planned route includes stops at Gleaston Water Mill, Conishead Priory, Ulverston, Humphrey Head, Grange over Sands, Levens Hall, Arnside, Leighton Moss RSPB nature reserve, Carnforth, Morecambe and Lancaster.
