New business is fresh start for painter Phil

Phil Dakin, who has worked for PADS on White Lund Industrial Estate, now known as Brewers, for 21 years, is downing tools in the shop to pick his own up when he goes back to his own painting and decorating business.

He said: “It’s been very challenging being a manager for another company than being my own boss. I’m going back to painting and decorating until I retire now. Running your own business is less stress and you can pick and choose what you do. It’s been exciting but it’s time for me to branch out on my own now.

“I’ve been the front face of the business for 21 years and I am very well known. I wish Brewers all the best at taking the business further.”

Phil started the business up in 1996 when it was calle d Summit Decorating Supplies. It was on White Lund Estate behind Storeys on White Lund. In 2006 the business moved to the present site on Eastgate and was built up to the business it is today.

Phil’s wife Jacqui was instrumental in setting up the soft furnishing side of the business. In 2015, PADS was bought out and is now known as Brewers.

Phil had no history in retail but when he was at school he worked for Tesco for three years. He was based in Manchester. but in 1978 upped sticks and moved to Morecambe, working in Tesco’s in the Arndale Centre for a couple of months before getting an apprenticeship with Lancaster City Council until 1983.

In 1983 he qualified as a painter and decorator and became self-employed.

“I was very successful,” said Phil.

“Then the opportunity came up to acquire Summit Decorating Supplies. We built that up before we outgrew the unit and moved to the present unit. The business was also built up to be a very successful business to be acquired by a large independent based in Eastbourne, known as Brewers, with 160 outlets. We are the farthest outlet in the north of the country. I’m 56 now so hopefully I can relax but I’ve got to keep busy. I’ve had a good relationship with staff from PADS who have been very supportive over the two years with the new business.

“As regards the new M6 link I think it’s the best thing that’s ever happened to the area. Its been a big benefit for the whole of White Lund.”
