Never mind the bollards '“ what about flowers?

Tony Vettese, who owns The Old Pier Bookshop on the promenade, has been keeping a close watch on the Lancaster City Council streetworks in the town centre which are almost complete.

He said: “I think the work is absolutely fantastic - but the bollards are a bit clinical.

“I think the idea is to stop delivery vehicles parking on the pavements because they crack under the huge weight of the wagons.

“My question would be will there be access for an ambulance or a fire engine?

“The bollards are not removable.

“There is a dent in one of the bollards on Back Crescent Street where a vehicle has managed to squeeze past already.

“I just think if there were small flower pots there instead of bollards, people would walk past and smile.

“I think the centre looks amazing and the finished look is really nice and clean.

“However there are so many seagulls I hope the council sweeper visits once a week to keep the area clean.”

What the council had to say about bollards:

““Euston Road between Marine Road Central and Central Drive has long been a pedestrian zone.

“Access for vehicles is totally prohibited.

“As part of the street works the council has put in place bollards to physically prevent vehicle access from Marine Road Central and via Back Crescent Street which is not a through route for vehicles – contrary to much understanding.

“These actions will assure pedestrian safety within the pedestrian zone. This will not affect vehicle access via Back Crescent Street to the rear of premises on Marine Road Central.”
