This is our second feature in which we celebrate some of Lancaster’s longest established businesses.

The businesses featured here started out as early as 1918 – notably Scott & Wilkinson accountants and the Halifax building society.

But all of them have at least 60 years of trading in our historic city under their belt.

It was 90 years ago when M & S opened its first store in Lancaster - and anyone looking up at its current Penny Street premises will notice a plaque which shows it wasn’t the first shop on that site as Boots was there before.

Originally Slinger & Taylor, this butcher’s shop first served customers in Lancaster Market before joining forces with neighbouring trader, D. Gregory, to form the shop in James Street seen today. Now the only independent butcher left in the city centre, the business has been family run for three generations.
