My lovely nan’s decline will be my inspiration

Emily Wise says her nan Avis was like a mum to her.

So when Avis began to show signs of Alzheimer’s Disease, it was a terrible shock for her loving granddaughter.

“My nan was a lovely lady,” said Emily, 24.

“She used to be a PA for a multi-millionaire on the isle of Jersey and ran drama groups for kids. So when she started being forgetful it was upsetting.

“I would speak to her and she wouldn’t recall anything I’d said. Then she had a fall and was taken into hospital.

“Then when I became pregnant with my son Dylan, she deteriorated rapidly. I could only take Dylan to see her once or twice.
She didn’t recognise me a few times. She thought Dylan was me.”

Avis suffered with dementia for six years until she died in July 2012.

Full-time mum Emily, from Morecambe, was so affected by her nan’s experience that she is now fund raising for the Alzheimer’s Society.

She has organised three events; two family fun days at the William Mitchell on April 19 and the Trimpell Club on June 29, and a bike ride from Heysham Cricket Club to Brookhouse and back on August 10.

Information about all three events can be found on Emily’s Facebook page .
