Murder probe launched after death of man in Windermere

A murder investigation is under way after the death of a man in Windermere.

Four people – two local males aged 26 and 31, and two females, aged 48 and 15, who were visiting the Lake District - have been arrested on suspicion of murder and are currently being questioned by police.

Police were called at 2.04am on Wednesday to reports of concern for the welfare of a man in Brookside, Lake Road, Windermere. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The dead man has been named as Gordon James Smith, aged 44, of Church Street, Windermere.

Superintendent Rob O’Connor said: “This death is still unexplained but detectives and officers are working hard to establish exactly what has happened.

“We urge the public to get in touch with any information that may assist the investigation. We would particularly like to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time or who heard an altercation.”

The area around the scene around Brookside, Lake Road is closed while enquiries are ongoing.
