AN academic from Over Kellet believes the death of his wife was due to management incompetence at our local hospitals trust, Morecambe’s MP has told the Commons.

During Prime Minister’s Question Time this afternoon, David Morris questioned David Cameron over the case of the late Penny Hegarty, a patient at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI) before her death in 2007.

Her husband Dr Phil Hegarty believes she died due to “management incompetence” at the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Trust, which runs the RLI.

Mrs Hegarty died of cancer after being misdiagnosed with arthritis and osteoporosis at the hospital.

Mr Morris challenged Mr Cameron to “assure Dr Hegarty and all of my constituents that work to improve management will continue and that this trust will be turned around.”

Mr Cameron said: “It is being turned around, but, that work needs to be undertaken with all speed.”
