Morecambe Visitor Sunshine Awards shortlist revealed

The shortlist for our ninth Sunshine Awards has been revealed.

We received some great nominations this year from our readers so thank you to everybody who took the time to nominate.

Such was the quality of nominations it was a challenging task for our editorial panel to whittle them down to a shortlist.

The Sunshine Awards are sponsored by Wright and Lord, and the winners will be announced at our Gala Dinner on Friday May 4 at the Midland Hotel.

“Paul who has been deaf from birth keeps our streets clean in Heysham with his trusty barrow and brushes. He can often be seen on Heysham Road in all weathers and in the village. Paul is always cheery and talks to people who stop him to thank him for his efforts. Paul deserves recognition for his work for the council and residents, now in his 70th year, still cheery and helpful to all he meets.”

“Hero builder Brian Turner pulled mum-of-two Julie Nicklin from a burning car at Asda supermarket on Ovangle Road. Brian, who works at Plas-Tech, reacted quickly to save Julie from her Smart car, which set alight as she turned the ignition at the petrol station. Brian, a dad-of-four, suffered burns to his hands, arms and leg but was back at work the same day.”

post it to social media. The campaign raised more than £16,000 for Rory to have 
his op.”

“Robert has been working endlessly to organise Lancaster Pride with the help of his volunteers. This year has been a tough challenge to raise funds and he deserves recognition for his hard work. Out In The Bay is based in Morecambe and has been running for the past ten years to provide services to those that are often stigmatised due to their gender and sexuality.”

“A team of more than 40 men and women have raised more than £200,000 for St John’s Hospice in Lancaster. The team completed a gruelling Peru trek which encompassed the Lares trail, reaching heights of up to 4,617m, three-and-a-half times the height of Ben Nevis, and half the height of Everest. They finished the journey at Machu Picchu, a 15th-century Inca citadel situated on a mountain ridge. Some braved altitude sickness and broken bones all in the name of the hospice.”
