SUPER-FAST broadband is coming to Morecambe after British Telecom announced an upgrade of our telephone exchange.

This means 16,000 homes and businesses in town could receive up to 40mb/s broadband as part of a £2.5billion rollout programme across the North West.

Upgrades are expected to be completed before the end of 2011 and during 2012.

Super-fast broadband upgrade is also scheduled in Lancaster before the end of 2012.

BT’s local network business Openreach expects to make super-fast fibre broadband available to two-thirds of UK homes and businesses by the end of 2015.

The telecoms giants says that upload speeds are the fastest in the UK, allowing large videos and data files to be sent almost instantly and activities, such as uploading hi-resolution photos to Facebook, to be completed in seconds.

David Morris MP, who sits on the government’s science and technology committee welcomed the news and said he had been “working closely with telecommunications companies and satellite broadband providers to ensure we have accessible and fast broadband.”
