A teaching assistant who started out as a dinner lady is retiring after more than 30 years at the same school.

Lynne Hayward, who was 65 last week, finishes her career at Great Wood Primary School later this month after 32 years.

Her time at the school began when she joined as a kitchen helper and then became a dinner lady while also helping out in the reception class. And when the then nursery nurse left the post 27 years ago, Lynne took over the position. She is now the longest-standing member of staff.

Lynne, who is married to Malcolm and has two children and a granddaughter, said she is now looking forward to enjoying her retirement, although she will miss the bustle of school life.

During her time at the school she has seen former pupils go on to bring their own children to her classroom.

She said: “I live near the school so I will be watching them all go past, which will be strange, but it will be a change for me, a new journey. I have enjoyed watching all the children blossom as they learn.”
