Morecambe’s volunteer RNLI lifeboat crew was launched in the dark last night after reports of a man entering the water.

At 11pm last night, Tuesday July 24, HM Coastguard requested Morecambe’s RNLI volunteer lifeboat crew to search for a man, believed to be in low mood, who was reported to have been seen entering the water in the vicinity of the Morecambe Sailing Club slipway, opposite Morecambe Town Hall.

The inshore lifeboat and inshore rescue hovercraft were quickly launched and they proceeded to conduct an extensive search of the immediate and surrounding areas for the man, supported by police officers and local coastguards searching from the shore, and Coastguard helicopter Rescue 936 (based in Caernarfon) from the air.

With the tide ebbing fast, they continued their search into the early hours, failing to locate the reported casualty, until it was called off by Coastguard Command at around 1.30am on Wednesday July 25. Both craft then returned to station.
