The long-awaited playground next to the Clock Tower includes play equipment “designed to give kids a fun, but challenging, experience” according to Lancaster City Council.

It includes a climbing dome and stainless steel tubes for children to use for balancing, hanging and sliding.

A spokesman for the council said the equipment – which is made from marine grade stainless steel – has been chosen to endure the exposed seafront location.

Coun Janice Hanson, cabinet member for planning and regeneration, said: “Traditional play areas tend to be made up of play equipment that leave little room for imagination or personal development.

“The old play area was coming to the end of its useful life and this new contemporary replacement will encourage kids to use play to improve their self-confidence and develop their imaginations. It really complements the regeneration work in this area.”

The new play area is part the council’s ‘Connecting Eric’ project – a blueprint to create better links between the promenade and town centre. It includes the work already done to convert the playground opposite Northumberland Street into a car park.

Lancaster City Council is currently also upgrading parts of Euston Road, Market Street and Victoria Street. This will include better street surfaces, seating and lighting.

The old play area on the promenade opposite Morecambe Town Hall will also be replaced.
