Morecambe MP fights to protect crabs

David Morris asked a top minister for help to stop edible crustaceans from being sold alive in sealed plastic bags.

Mr Morris put in a written Parliamentary question asking what laws are in place to ensure that crabs and lobsters are kept humanely by retailers.

George Eustice, Minister of State, Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, said there are no plans to introduce controls on the packing of live crustaceans.

Last month shoppers complained after a Korean supermarket in London sold live crabs wrapped in polystyrene and cling film with elastic bands holding their legs and claws together.

A spokesman for Mr Morris said he’d read about the issue in the national news and also been told about it by constituents. The MP will hold further talks with the minister to see if regulations can be put in place.
