Morecambe FC have launched an investigation after a youth team player was sent off for punching an opponent during a game on Saturday.

Video leaked online shows the under 18s player striking Oldham Athletic player Jack Tuohy, who has his back turned, with the right-handed blow sending him to the ground.

The Morecambe number nine in the clip was shown a red card for the punch with Tuohy understood to have been checked over in hospital on Saturday evening having scored in the 7-2 win for the Latics.

A Shrimps club statement said: “We have been made aware of an incident that occurred in a youth team game against Oldham and will hold our own enquiries into the matter.”

Oldham’s youth team manager Tony Philliskirk told the Latics’ website: “We were cruising at 6-2 and unfortunately certain events transpired and that’s all people are talking about now after the game.

“I didn’t see it at the time but others did but, at the end of the day, we are just happy he has come out with just a sore jaw, neck and head.”

Tuohy said on Twitter the incident had left him being sick but that apart from soreness he was okay following the punch during the game at Oldham’s Chapel Road Training Ground.

The footage has been widely condemned online with it understood that the Shrimps will deal with the matter internally.
