Morecambe family scoops £5k in new Veterans' Lottery

Fortune favours the brave as one Morecambe '˜military family' discovered after they won top prize in the first ever Veterans' Lottery draw.

Karen Whitfield’s scooped £5,000 in the July draw after she decided to join the lottery to support veterans in need.

Karen’s husband Kingsley is a retired Sergeant Major with the Queen’s Lancashire Regiment (now the Duke Of Lancaster’s Regiment) and served tours in Afghanistan, Iraq, Bosnia and Northern Ireland, whilst son Chris was in the same regiment as his dad and served two tours of Iraq. He was medically discharged after damaging his hearing.

Karen said: “I still can’t believe I’ve won! I don’t do the National Lottery but I decided to join the Veterans’ Lottery because I’ve got two veterans in the house. The money goes to causes that matter to us and I felt I could afford the £10 a month. Chris battles with PTSD and the military is a very important part of our lives.”

Karen, 45, an assistant manager at Craigneil Residential Home, is yet to plan how she’ll spend her windfall.

The Veterans’ Lottery is run by the Veterans’ Foundation charity. Every month there’s £8,000 up for grabs plus the chance of the rollover which can boost the jackpot prize to more than £80,000.

Veterans’ Foundation patron, Hannah Campbell, who lost her left leg during service in Iraq, said: “It’s great to see the joy and happiness the lottery has given Karen and the family but they’ll know only too well the lottery exists to fund vital projects for our heroes in need from tackling homelessness through to offering support for the trauma of war.”
