Cameron Redpath, who has cerebral palsy, set up his disability awareness campaign one year ago and has received immense support ever since.

Support has ranged from the community, Lancaster and Fleetwood MP Cat Smith and even a letter from Her Majesty the Queen.

Now Cherylee Houston, who plays Izzy Armstrong in TV’s Coronation Street is also supporting the 16-year-old’s campaign.

“Cameron is doing amazing work making changes around Lancaster for people who are wheelchair users,” said Cherylee, who grew up in Morecambe.

“I’ve been blown away by how determined he is to make the city more accessible and how successful he has been.

“He’s one of those incredible people who wants to make a legacy of change that benefits everyone and also how kind and thoughtful that is for other people who can’t speak out.”

Since setting up his campaign, Cameron has been successful in organising refurbishment work at Lancaster Bus Station and helping to implement ten dropped kerbs on the Ridge Estate, where he lives.

To top it off Cameron has also been elected Young Labour’s Lancaster and Fleetwood Disability’s Officer.

“I am really proud I have managed to help organise something this big,” said Cameron, who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy in 2002.

Cameron negotiated with Stagecoach and Lancaster City Council to amend bus stand 1 at the station last summer. The stand includes a wider platform for easier access for wheelchair users, the elderly and pram users who are getting on and off the bus.

But Cameron wants all of the bus station to become disabled friendly.

“I believe the bus station can be more disabled friendly and I am hoping to have discussions with the city council soon,” said Cameron,

For now Cameron is busy in his new role as disability officer and is also preparing to start at Lancaster and Morecambe College in September to study ‘Travel and Tourism’.

He said: “I can’t thank everyone enough for their support.”
