Morecambe Carnival: Mayor on a bike joins in Sunday party
The '˜Mayor on a Bike' in his full regalia will join the Morecambe Carnival parade on Sunday.
Coun Jon Barry, who is coming to the end of his colourful year as Mayor of Lancaster, will cycle along Morecambe seafront on his two wheel-powered ‘Mayor Mobile’.
Coun Barry, the district’s first-ever Green party mayor, has made headlines for cycling to engagements instead of using the traditional mayoral car.
He will be joined by a host of floats from local organisations in the Olympics-themed parade, starting at 1.30pm on Sunday.
They include the 1st Bare Boy’s Brigade, Animal Care, the Arndale Centre, the Batala samba reggae drumming group, The Bay Beat Band, Black Bear Computers, the Carnforth Carnival King and Queen, EDF Energy (owners of Heysham Power Stations), the Festival Market traders, Hest Bank Kennels, Heysham High School, Lancashire County Council Foster Carers and Families, The League of Splendid, Morecambe Amateur Dramatic and Operatic Society in their colourful Barnum circus-themed float, the Morecambe Carnival King and Queen in a limousine, the Megan’s Wish charity, Morecambe Brass Band, Morecambe Bloomers, Morecambe Cricket Club, Morecambe Face Painting and Parties, the Morecambe MC Michael Glen, Morecambe Town Council, the Rainbow Centre, the Red Rose Steampunks, St John’s Hospice, the Morecambe FC Shrimpette Cheerleaders, the Speed of Sight charity, Stagestruck Theatre Group, Stephensons Dairy, Stingray’s Swimming School, Tracey Austin’s Dance Factory, Volker Brooks, Westgate Scout Group, Wolfwood and the Zumba Ladies.
There will also be police horses in the parade.
The parade will start on the promenade opposite the Lothersdale Hotel and will continue along to the Battery before turning. It will end close to the Midland hotel.
Prizes will be awarded for the best floats by an independent judging panel.
Please note that the Northumberland Street to Central Drive section of Marine Road Central will be closed to road traffic from 11am to 10pm on Sunday.
