Morecambe in bloom? Wet and warm weather leads to weeds spoiling beach

The recent bout of warm weather mixed with rainy days has caused weeds to grow in abundance along Morecambe beach.

Visitor reader Tony Suett sent us these photographs which show the state of the beach near the Midland Hotel, along the Stone Jetty and the central beach past the Eric Morecambe statue and along to the clock tower.

He said: “This is what all the visitors see; it’s not a pretty sight. Perhaps its time for a clean up?”

A Lancaster City Council spokesman said the overgrown areas were as a result of a recent mix of wet and warm weather.

The spokesman said: “The recent very wet weather followed by periods of intense sun has provided the perfect conditions for the rapid growth of weeds.

“To tackle the problem of weeds on the beach above the high tide line, the area will be treated with herbicide this week.”
