Twelve years ago two best friends from Morecambe came to Australia with nothing but backpacks and a couple of hundred pounds in their pockets.

Fast forward a decade and Ephram Stephenson and Jamie Lewis are about to celebrate 10 years running a thriving building recruitment business with offices in Sydney and Brisbane.

Ephram and Jamie, both former advertising reps with The Visitor, arrived in Australia on a 12 month working holiday visa after touring Thailand and Bali.

They first got jobs working on the Sydney Harbour Bridge managing the Bridge Climb Experience, where tourists ascend to the top of the 134m high landmark to take in breathtaking views. There, Ephram met his future wife, who also worked there on weekends.

After Jamie left to carry on travelling, Ephram set up Design and Construct, having the building trade in his blood. His grandfather Geoff Jackson ran a construction firm in Lancaster and Morecambe during the 50s, 60s and 70s and dad Francis was a site manager throughout Lancashire.

Design and Construct now has 15 staff, with Jamie managing the Brisbane office. The firm is looking to branch out further afield in Australia.

And pride of place on the wall of the office in Sydney is a framed, signed Morecambe FC shirt!
