Here is a first glimpse of how a new monument to Morecambe and Wise might look.

This towering bronze wall relief of Eric Morecambe cuddling his best friend and comedy partner Ernie Wise will take pride of place on Morecambe promenade opposite the Winter Gardens when it opens in 2016.

Sculptor Graham Ibbeson, the man who created the Eric Morecambe Statue, has finalised his drawings of the planned attraction and space has been ordered at the foundry where it will be made.

Money is being raised in a campaign dubbed ‘Morecambe Gets Wise’ by The Visitor, and good progress is being made towards the target of £70,000. Recently The Visitor’s Sunshine Ball raised more than £2,600 for the appeal.

Jim Cadman, project co-ordinator, said: “We have had good and positive feedback from members of the business community who were at the Sunshine Ball and we would like to thank everyone who made a contribution on the evening.”

The relief will be housed in a new ‘Sunshine Garden of Fame’ consisting of plaques inscribed with names of celebrities and local people, scheduled to open next year to coincide with the 75th anniversary of Eric and Ernie first joining forces.
