Charlie Overett said he was walking along the promenade at around 4pm yesterday, Thursday, with friends David Hartley and Denise McNamara when they spotted the woman down at the shore.

He said: “The woman was walking into the sea right opposite the Midland. Denide went down to speak to her first of all, but when she couldn’t hold her back on her own we went down to help the lady out of the water.

“She was shaking so we took her to the Midland to try to warm her up a bit and call for an ambulance.

“The hotel manager and barman were fantastic. They gave us all tea and mince pies while we waited for the ambulance to arrive.

“They then asked us if we wanted anything else to eat.

“I thought it was really nice of them to treat us all so well.”

Police and the ambulance service both attended the incident, and a 49-year-old woman was taken to hospital.
