GUESTS, local dignitaries, press and new residents were given a bird's eye view of the Middleton Village retirement complex from helicopters at the launch of the first phase of development.
The Mayor of Lancaster, Helen Helme, officially opened the complex – sited at the former Pontin's holiday camp – on Friday along with other local dignitaries.
The guests were all welcomed by Prestigious Retirement Villages' chairman John Ward who said: "This is a truly unique concept which we cannot wait to introduce to the UK market. Not only will there be gym, tennis and bowling facilities on site, we have dedicated 20 acres of the 80-acre site to natural open spaces and the complex has its own private beach."
Mike and Margaret Machin from Abraham Heights in Lancaster have bought a two-bedroomed bungalow at the site.
Mike said: "We thought the move would give us security in our old age and the facilities offered provide us with a leisure centre right on our doorstep."
Colin and Vivien Green from Wrightington near Wigan have bought a top-floor apartment Colin said: "There are plenty of social activities and it provides us with independent living."
