Mick Dennison column: Raise your glasses to Cask Ale Week

Coming quickly on the tail of our very own Beer Festival in August is National Cask Ale Week – Only in Britain, only in Pubs – from September 27 until October 6.

Pubs are being urged to plan ahead and get involved in the annual celebration of cask ale – I suppose we in Morecambe could treat it like a mini, multi-venue, one-week beer festival. Any other pubs up for that?

Figures show that almost half of UK adults have never tried cask ale and nearly 30% of those cannot give a reason why they haven’t, so the theme for this year is ‘Introduce a Friend’.

Quite simply, Cask Ale Week is a platform for pubs and breweries all over the country to give people the reason to try.

Pubs can make the most of the week by inviting their regular cask ale drinkers to introduce cask ale virgins to the great tastes of our national drink. There are plenty of good venues serving quality ales in our town; let’s get out and discover them.

Going on last year’s experiences, the ‘Try before You Buy’ scheme went down a storm across the country and it’s something we will be continuing here in the York as well as a full week of beer-related activities.

One great aspect of the timing of the week is that it takes in two good live football weekends and a full week of European matches to draw punters out to the pubs of Morecambe.

What a good time to get some cracking deals going for real ale. If any pubs want to get involved in an impromptu beer crawl around town, get in touch with me and let’s see what we can get going.

Cask Ale Week could be a great catalyst to bring new punters into the pubs.

Talking about getting punters into the pubs, we can get back to normal this weekend as the Premier League returns to our screens after a two-week layoff due to the Internationals.

Unfortunately, the England v Moldova game proved to be a damp squib (literally) last Friday as it was on ITV and the horrible weather kept many people indoors.

As this goes to press, we will all be cheering on England as they take on the Ukraine in Kiev. Get down to your local and take in the atmosphere!
