HOMES in Silverdale lost their BT landlines after would-be metal thieves targeted fibre optic cables.

Thousands of phones lines across West Cumbria were affected by the theft which occurred on Friday afternoon.

A fibre optic cable was cut through near Workington affecting lines in the Harrington, Cockermouth, Bootle, Holmrook, Barrow and Silverdale areas.

People in the affected areas had either lost total use of their landline phones or were only able to use them intermittently.

BT said homes affected had their phone lines restored by Saturday.

One theory police are exploring is the fibre-optic cables were damaged by metal-thieves seeking copper to sell.
