Mayor of Lancaster backs holiday food projects
Speaking at a relaunch of Sustainable Food City at Lancaster Town Hall on Thursday, Coun Andrew Kay gave his support to volunteers setting up food clubs, which intercept safe and edible food that would otherwise just go to waste.
He also welcomed community food growing projects and making the link with using surplus food from these for food clubs.

There were also discussions on the advantages of setting up a local depot to store surplus food for community use.
“Initiatives like Sustainable Food City are doing a tremendous job in developing creative solutions towards a more sustainable food market and making use of surpluses,” the mayor said.
“This is of particular relevance in the area of ‘holiday hunger’, which is a major problem for many families.
“This is most acute during the long summer holidays, which are just around the corner, so it was particularly timely for the Sustainable Food City group to meet and work on solutions.”
