A man is to face a crown court jury over claims that he battered a Wigan-based former Warriors star.

Second-rower Danny Tickle was left injured after an incident outside the Queen’s nightclub in Wigan Road, Ashton-in-Makerfield, in the early hours of November 1 last year.

Golborne-born Tickle, who was playing for Widnes Vikings at the time of the incident but is now on Castleford Tigers’ books, was taken to hospital for treatment.

Stuart David Johnson, 28, of Grimshaw Court, Golborne, appeared before Wigan and Leigh magistrates where he denied causing Mr Tickle grievous bodily harm.

He was committed for trial at Liverpool Crown Court which is set to begin on Wednesday May 18 and was released on bail in the meantime.

Tickle has previously played for Hull, Halifax as well as Wigan Warriors.

He has played for the English national team against New Zealand at Brentford in November 2002, kicking four goals.

He toured Fiji and Tonga with England A later that year.

He made three appearances on the tour.
