A young man is fighting for his life after falling from a balcony in Lancaster.

He suffered serious head injuries after plunging 25 feet into an enclosed courtyard at a property at Stonewell last night, Tuesday.

Specialist firefighters from St Annes were brought in with lifting ropes to hoist the man, aged in his twenties, on a stretcher from the scene.

Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman John Taylor said “seconds counted” in reaching the casualty and getting him to hospital after he suffered “severe trauma” in the fall.

Two fire engines from Lancaster, police and an ambulance raced to the scene at around 7.20pm.

Fire crews were requested by North West Ambulance Service paramedics as they couldn’t reach the courtyard where the man had fallen.

He was taken to the Royal Lancaster Infirmary and later transferred to the Royal Preston Hospital for treatment.

Lancashire Police described his condition this morning, Wednesday, as “critical but stable”.

Officers said they were investigating the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
