Luke Friend, the teenage X Factor finalist from 2013 is the latest of the show’s contestants to sign a record deal.
You will remember Luke when you see him, he is the guy with the gravelly voice akin to gargling with a rusty nail.
I don’t have a crystal ball but I get the feeling Luke will do alright
He received a lot of attention during his time on the X Factor for the state of his hair.
He had grown dreadlocks and reached that stage where he didn’t bother washing it at all because apparently after a while hair becomes self-washing.
What an unpleasant thought.
So when we arranged for him to pop into The Bay I was concerned about the upholstery on the fairly new studio chairs.
I couldn’t bear the thought of dandruff or hair grease discolouring the fabric.
You will be as delighted as me to learn that Luke now regularly uses shampoo these days and that he actually gave his mane a full on wash last week. Phew.
If you do well and reach the latter stages of the X Factor, chances are you will be offered a record deal.
That is no guarantee of success as we have seen a million times before.
But it has worked out for some namely Olly Murs, One Direction and Rebecca Fergusson.
None of them won the show but they made the most of their chance.
I don’t have a crystal ball but I get the feeling Luke will do alright.
He seems to be approaching things in the right way.
He is currently working on his debut album and there is not a cover version in sight.
He is fully involved in the song-writing process and what I’ve heard so far is certainly credible.
Luke told me, “The album is nearly done.
“But I’m a bit of a perfectionist so I finish a track then a week later I want to go back and tinker with it again.
“I’m working with lots of great people such as the band ‘Lower Than Atlantis’ plus I wrote my first single with Roy Stride from ‘Scouting For Girls.’
“I’ve been a big fan for years and they were the first gig I went to at the age of eight so I had to contact them to do some writing together.
“I told Roy that and it made him feel really old.”
Luke Friend’s debut single ‘Hole In My Heart’ is out now and his album will follow later in the year.
