Made possible by money raised by National Lottery players, the The Folly Experience is a project based in Settle’s only Grade 1 listed building.

The Folly has an unusual and eye-catching appearance as well as a quirky history.

The Folly contains the Museum of North Craven Life and collections of local importance relating to the social, agricultural and industrial history of the area. It also houses The Folly Coffee House.

It is now fully owned by the trust, which aims to open as much of it as possible to the public and this project marks a major step down that road.

The project will enable local people and visitors to learn about the rich and surprising history and heritage of The Folly, Settle and the surrounding area. There will be many exciting opportunities for people to get involved with the project as volunteers or supporters, in a variety of ways. There will be opportunities to develop new skills and learn more about the area.

It will also make use of the important local collections and archives owned by the Trust as well as those of other organisations and individuals.

A part-time officer will develop an exciting range of activities and events and promote the heritage of the area.

They will work with local organisations and people to develop The Folly as a thriving attraction, community asset and in its developing role as a gateway to the North Craven area. The project will start in summer 2018 and run for two years.

Steve Amphlett, chair of the trust, said: “We are excited to have received support from the Heritage Lottery Fund for a project that will help local people develop stronger links with their heritage and enable visitors to engage with the rich history of the area.”

David Renwick, head of Heritage Lottery Fund, Yorkshire and the Humber, said: “The Folly is highly significant, being the only Grade I listed building in Settle.

“Thanks to National Lottery players this project will enable the local community and visitors alike to get involved and find out about the fascinating history of The Folly and its collections.”
