Longridge based Singletons Dairy and Barton based JJ Sandham will be shipping out more than 70,000 Lancashire cheese bombs to the USA and an impressive 10,000 to Australia.

“We believe this is the largest single export of Lancashire cheese from the UK ever,” said Tilly Carefoot, owner of Singletons.

The bombs, each weighing one pound, have been a popular seller for the company for many years, but this year’s sales have rocketed to an unprecedented level.

Each bomb is hand crafted, wrapped in a traditional muslin cloth before being dipped in a coat of black wax several times.

“It’s great news for Lancashire cheese and great news for Lancashire.” said Chris Sandham, of Sandhams. “We are delighted that two separate companies can co-operate for the general good of the industry.”

Singletons will ship out more than 350 tonnes of cheese (made from 3,500,000 litres of milk) in the next six weeks to areas such as Lebanon, Korea and Norway. “Flying the flag for British dairy worldwide,” said Singletons sales manager, John Carr. “The sun never sets on the Singleton’s empire!!”
