That’s the message of the campaign started one year ago by Lancaster University to inspire the public to help fund research into this dreadful disease.

Defying Dementia is a community-supported campaign aiming to make a real difference by tackling the threat of brain diseases like Alzheimer’s, other forms of dementia, Parkinson‘s and Motor Neurone disease.

With an ageing population, more families are facing the heartbreak caused by these illnesses which destroy memory, personality and movement.

So far the campaign has raised more than £52,000 of the £165,000 needed with the support of the local community.

The money is used to support world-class neurodegenerative research at Lancaster University.

Prof David Allsop from the Defying Dementia team said: “We are fundraising to get our research into clinical trials so it can benefit the public. We do not take a cut of any donation, it goes straight to the lab for research.

The Defying Dementia campaign raises funds for Prof Allsop’s promising Alzheimer’s drug and for other neurodegenerative research into Motor Neurone disease, different types of dementia and Parkinson’s.

Donations from the public will be used to diagnose these diseases earlier when there is a chance of slowing them down, develop new treatments and test drugs already in use that could be used to treat these diseases.

Fundraising events so far include fundraising at Pizza Margherita and the John O’Gaunt pub as well as A Grand Night Out at Lancaster Grand Theatre, community events and sponsorship.
