Pub singer Paul Akister gained an army of new fans and 4,000 extra Twitter followers in 24 hours after wowing TV audiences on The X Factor.
Paul, from Lancaster, had celebrity judges Gary Barlow, Sharon Osbourne, Louis Walsh and Nicole Scherzinger eating out of the palm of his hand on Saturday and Sunday night’s ITV shows.
The shy 24-year-old, a regular on the Morecambe and Lancaster pub circuit, brought the house down as he sang ‘A Song For You’ by Christina Aguilera to a live arena audience on Sunday.
After watching himself on TV, Paul said: “It’s all gone a bit mental, my phone has been melting this weekend. I was on 200 twitter followers on Saturday. Now I’m over 4,000.”
The judges voted him through to next week’s ‘Boot Camp’ with four ‘yeses’ after being blown away by his powerful, soulful vocals.
“Paul, I love the way you came on stage, you’re a quiet and unassuming guy but the music gives you so much power and you took the whole room by storm,” said Gary.
Sharon said: “That was just amazing” while Louis said Paul had “old school soul inside him”.
On Saturday night’s ‘closed room’ audtions Paul impressed the judges with his rendition of ‘A Change is Gonna Come’ by Sam Cooke.
Tune in to The X Factor this Saturday and Sunday night on ITV to see if Paul can make it further in the competition.
