A public consultation is being launched into closing Lancaster's city centre Post Office and relocating it above WH Smith in Market Street.

Lancaster MP Cath Smith said she opposed the move, saying the potential new site is an entirely inappropriate venue for the Post Office.

The consultation will start tomorrow, May 11, and close on June 22.

Ms Smith said: “This makes it harder to access for those with disabilities, as well as those who do not like to be in crowded spaces.

“I’ll be fighting the Post Office on this and campaigning to save our Crown Post Office, and all the services they offer.

“I have tried to engage with the Post Office management on this over the past months and have found them difficult to deal with – they have avoided meetings and delayed replying to my letters with genuine questions.

“At a public meeting at the Town Hall they wouldn’t show up to answer questions from the public.

“Now we need answers and I’ll not be giving up on getting them.”

The Post Office has been contacted for comment. See this week’s Lancaster Guardian for more.
