Labour leadership challenger has Morecambe roots

Labour leadership candidate Owen Smith has a connection to our district – he was born in Morecambe.

The man who will take on Jeremy Corbyn was born in the seaside resort in 1970. He then grew up in South Wales and was educated at Barry Comprehensive School and the University of Sussex.

The MP for Pontypridd and former shadow work and pensions secretary emerged as the sole challenger for Mr Corbyn after his fellow candidate Angela Eagle withdrew from the race on Tuesday.
